Art Arises

June 20, 2009

“Art arises from loss. I wish this weren’t the case. I wish that every time I met a new woman and she rocked my world, I was inspired to write my ass off. But that is not what happens. What happens is we lie around in bed eating chocolate and screwing. Art is what happens when things don’t work out, when you’re licking your wounds. Art is, to a larger extent than people would like to think, a productive licking of the wounds.”

  1. Monkey believes there is truth in what your saying, but as in all things, its opposite is contained. Somewhere in that loss contains the beauty of what was, of what you had. That beauty has the ability to inspire creaion as much as the apparent loss of it. (Though Monkey believes that it is always there, even if we are wallowing in our sorrow.) Does not Shakespeare’s love sonnets show us this? Love has inspired many artists to try and capture in paint, words, or song what it is that they are feeling. As has the beauty of nature has acted for our beloved Romantics. It all depends what the artist chooses to focus on.

Thank you for your time my new hairless friend, and I, Monkey, will check back to see how you are faring. But now, it’s time for a banana.
